Applying for a Prereg Position

cvPreregistration can be undertaken in a number of pharmacy settings.

Where to Apply?

This depends on what you prefer. Before applying it is a good idea to get some work experience in the different pharmacy sectors find out what you enjoy most. The pre-reg year helps define your future career and you don’t want to end up in an environment you don’t like?

Community Pharmacy: This may be an independent pharmacy or a multiple. Some Gp practices and medical practices also have approved training sites. When carrying out your training you should also try and arrange at least two weeks of cross-sector experience in hospital pharmacy.

Hospital Pharmacy: This is usually within an NHS hospital however there are a few private hospitals that have approved training sites. When carrying out your training in hospital pharmacy you should also try and undertake at least two weeks of cross-sector experience in community pharmacy

You are also able to undertake your pre-reg training in Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) or Industrial Pharmaceutical Companies for a maximum of six months, the rest of the training period should be either in hospital pharmacy which should include two weeks of cross-sector experience in community pharmacy, or could be in community pharmacy with a two weeks placement in hospital pharmacy.

When to Apply?

Application deadlines vary amongst the different training providers but are generally before the start of the final year, so you need to start applying early!

Hospitals have a much earlier deadline.

If you are applying to independent pharmacies these are slightly more flexible and depend on the employer.

How to Apply?

If you are applying for hospitals, you will need to register on the NHS Pharmalife website.

If you are applying to independent pharmacies you will have to prepare a covering letter and CV. As well as applying to places on our website you can also apply through the NPA website.

Multiples usually have their own application forms which you may be able to get from your university or on request from their head office.
